THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) now considers the use of the anti-pain medicine fentanyl as a party drug an 'emerging drug problem' in the country.

PDEA Director-General Moro Virgilio Lazo said they are trying to determine the source of the supply of the opioid whose medical use is to manage pain in cancer patients.'We are closely coordinating with our foreign counterparts to help us with information gathering,' Lazo said on Tuesday.Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Fentanyl continues to fuel an epidemic of synthetic opioid drug overdose deaths in the United States. Fentanyl's ease of manufacture and high potency makes it easier to produce and smuggle.Lazo said that the Philippines remains the transshipment point for international illegal drug smuggling.
