Covid-19 pandemic is not over. 😷 ECRNewsWatch Covid19

The World Health Organisation on Friday declared it was no longer a global public health emergency.

South Africa's health spokesperson Foster Mohale says the move by the WHO was due to the number of cases now being far lower than at the height of the pandemic.Covid no longer a global health emergency: WHO "People are still testing positive even though the numbers are relatively low and as the department, we have enough vaccine doses.

"We continue to offer those doses, especially for those who feel they are vulnerable like your elderly, those people living with comorbidities like HIV, TB, and diabetes precisely because their immune system is compromised. "So we continue to receive requests from those people who want to get booster doses to continue to protect themselves against this pandemic."

Global Covid-19 Crisis Over, WHO SaysThe World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Covid-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. In March 2023, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed confidence in the progress made against the novel coronavirus, saying: "I am confident that at some point this year we will be able to say that Covid-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern - and as a pandemic." However, South Africa's national health department has said it does not mean the pandemic is over. This comes as the Progressive Health Forum - a health advocacy network - are encouraging citizens, particualarly those over 50 years of age, to get vaccine booster shots as winter approaches.
