The Government is considering ways to reduce the number of people not earning money or looking for jobs by cutting NHS waiting lists amid concerns that backlogs are preventing people from getting back into work.
Ministers are exploring other options for the collaboration of the Department of Work and Pensions and the Department for Health and Social Care to raise the profile of work outcomes in the consideration of treatment plans and healthcare approaches,The number of working-age adults who are out of the labour market – and therefore economically inactive – due to long-term sickness has been rising since 2019 and is a large contributor to the problem of a shrinking workforce.
The ONS said a range of factors were likely to be behind this, including an aging workforce, long Covid, and backlogs in the NHS. The number of people on Referral to Treatment waiting lists has also risen sharply since the first lockdown was introduced, from around 4.4m people in February 2020 to 7m in August 2022.
