Authorities are continuing to desperately search for a radioactive capsule — which can cause severe burns and other health problems — along a 1,400-kilometre stretch of road in Western Australia.

abc.net.au/news/radioactive-capsule-search-perth-to-pilbara-/101902914A radiation safety expert has described the loss of a tiny radioactive capsule along a 1,400-kilometre stretch of road in Western Australia as a 'bizarre, one-in-100-year event'.It was lost between Newman and Perth some time after January 11

Radiation Services WA general manager Lauren Steen said it was a “highly unlikely” scenario, due to the safety measures typically in place for the transit of radioactive materials.“Typically they’re transported in highly protected casing that are subject to a certification verification stage. The housing is subjected to rigorous testing for vibrations, heat, high impact.

“If you were to hold the source in your hand for a substantial period of time, you would start to notice some radiation burns.” “While you may not have immediate health effects, they can occur relatively rapidly over a short period of time, if it is kept close to the body.

Lots of 1 in 100 year events happening lately. Looking like a great century ahead.

so they lost another one 100 years ago did they

Australia is ready for nuclear power. At least 99 years before another fuck up like that. 😵‍💫

How many times has it happened? A 1 in 100 yr stat is a hairy arsed bull-dust stat, just like the 1 in 1000 year flood data that was guessed at too. Let’s just say human carelessness and a poor process caused a loss of something dangerous. Don’t legitimise it with bulldust stats.

Interesting how safety is always, 100%, guaranteed, hand on heart, the highest priority 'after' a safety breach. Every single time after something patently avoidable and unsafe happens it is a priority. How does that work?

One in a hundred year even? 100 years ago when did they have a hazardous radioactive capsule? Did I miss something? Hazardous Radioactive capsules back in 1923, that went missing during transport, who would have guessed.

1 in 100 year is a bizarre statement. Like theres a record of loss dating back to 1923 of radioactive substance loss.

Can't manage a capsule, and insane LNP mob wants costly nuclear plants! The immaculate Japanese couldn't manage Fukushima nuclear plant, the equally intelligent Germans had abandoned nuclear plants Chernobyl grown ups suffering in pain

'A radiation safety expert has described the loss of a tiny radioactive capsule along a 1,400 kilometre stretch of road in Western Australia as a 'bizarre, one-in-100-year event'...And so was Chernobyl and Fukushima. Do not mess with Nuclear

It only takes once to be a problem. But packed in perth? And then lost before inspection? totally sus. Likely stolen.

Is the ABC gonna keep hiding the fact that Pfizer was about to make bio weapons out of covid to keep selling vaccines? Jordan tristan walker let it slip and it's all over Twitter.. wake up and report real news..

Is this a satire

Wait until AUKUS nuclear powered submarines arrived...

The whyalla steelworks lost one probably 20 years ago. The conclusion was that one (that was in service as a bin level probe) went into the process, got crushed up, eventually made into steel and went into making some slightly higher than background radioactive steel beams.

Don’t the kids of today love to panic about just about everything. Time they grew up.

'Fell off the back of a truck.' Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Like all 1 in a hundred event. Major consequences

Why aren't we thinking terrorism If I asked you what Australian industry, do you think might have a lot of rightwing extremists in it? Is there a fair chance you'd say mining? So we could possibly have someone with access and experience with explosives an radioactive material..

I daresay it's very likely it was nicked.

So it happened 100 years ago too. Understandable given the track then and the largely unsprung wagon.

That frequently? I’m aghast. It is radioactive ☢️ material. There is more security at the mall. Rio Tinto better have Geiger counters by the hundreds along the route.

Appalling how they talk down the danger and give vague descriptions of the risk. People are likely to handle this in close proximity which carries a high risk of acute radiation poisoning. Children are at much higher risk than adults because of their smaller bodies.

Everything that happens these days is a “once in a 100 years” event. 🤷‍♂️

Anyone else remember the missing radioactive capsule of 1923 saga?

Like the flooding?

Is this the biggest game of find the needle in the haystack?

Remember years ago when satellite technology could see a coin on the ground from space. Surely advancements since then means they could find this capsule n maybe MH 370 while their at it.

If this was a movie, some yokel would be opening it and making jewellery out of it right about now....

so its like floods?

F$&$&n BS it’s a one in a 100 year event. It is a result of incompetence and complacency.

should not have happened end of story, all radiological incidents that have potential to harm the public need to be treated seriously, sad that there are already apologists out and triggered because they're worried about negative impact on a potential nuclear power industry.

Just another example of 'can-do-capitalism' taking the lowest tender and shaving cost at the expense of safety. This is what deregulation does.

Is this Australia's Goiânia incident?

This is super frightening❗️How many 50m swimming pools can this pellet make radioactive? Or how many football fields? I’m having trouble with scale.

Radiation nuclear wasn't even invented 100 yrs ago. Moronic thing to say !!

Bit like the pandemic.

And so is it worth any $$$$? Whole saga is a bit strange.

Tipping that the half-life of the radioactive contents is greater than 100 years.

So it's gonna happen next week then?

There are a lot of 1-in-100-year events on page 9.

Opps 😅🥴🧪👀

Nonsense. YouTube is full of mishaps with medical radiation materials.

Sounds like you are trying to minimise this incident and make it sound like it was out of everybody’s control Surely you wouldn’t be doing PR work for Rio Tinto FellOffTheBackOfTheTruck

They have sold it

These events happening a lot dosnt time fly.

Experts.

Its just not great timing. Uranium is special stuff. When I was at school ( physics class ), I believe I worked out that a kilogram would have a 100 klm blast radius. A kilo of uranium in sydney cbd, would be a blast radius out to Penrith.

'1 in 100 year event'. Twice I've seen semi trailer back doors fly open on the highway from truck company's inadequate procedures.

Why do you do this? '1 in 100 year event' means nothing even for events that have repetition history. In this case it is utterly asinine...

Well that one way of saying we are probably stupid enough to let it happen again, 1-100 ain't that bad is it?

These “1 in a hundred events” seem to be occurring every few weeks.

Nonsensical

Fishy

I guess the last time a radioactive capsule fell off a truck in WA was 100 years ago? Oh wait.....

Yeah, about every four years, experts comment about these 1-in-100 year events 🤷‍♂️

1 in a hundred year event. This seems to happen all the time these days

How about just get a Geiger counter a drive the trip? If it's toxic, it'll pick it up.

Does anyone believe a word these 'experts' have to say anymore?

Incompetence is much more common than that.

yet another reason to never visit western australia
