abc.net.au/news/canberrans-waiting-specialists-or-surgery-face-lengthy-delays/101877738Under Canberra Health Services guidelines, Rohan Goyne should have been able to meet with a specialist to discuss his need for surgery within 90 days. He's been waiting almost a year and a half. With no private health insurance, he was referred to the public health system.
"But I just don't know because I haven't been able to go to an appointment and discuss it with a general surgeon." "But once it's beyond 500 days in a circumstance where the benchmark is 90 days – that's not reasonable."Liberal MLA Leanne Castley says the pandemic only exacerbated an existing problem with medical wait times.A ministerial briefing from mid last year obtained by the opposition under freedom of information laws showed long delays in a range of surgical and non-surgical areas.
The documents show 130 Category 1 patients — who guidelines recommend are seen in 30 days — were waiting an average of 163 days for ear, nose and throat surgeries. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith says health services are working to recruit more medical specialists."There's been significant improvement in the waitlist despite all the challenges with COVID-19," Ms Stephen-Smith said."There used to be around 30,000 patients who used to have long waits for outpatient appointments. Now we have 30,000 people in total on the waitlist.
In part due to coverage by the ABC and Co. Good job at bringing in Let It Rip. Then excusing the massive government failure.
That would have been when Nick Coatsworth was in charge of Canberra Medical Services Executive Director Medical Services Group Oct 2020 - Nov 2021
they're all about breaking unions, but never touch the country's arguably most powerful closed shop around the australian medical association, its affiliates, the royal australasian college of surgeons and royal australian college of general practitioners
jdscott1959 It’s not just Canberra. Stop destroying Medicare and our publichealth system. Bulkbilling practice must stay robust. Private health insurance shouldn’t be allowed to destroy access to care for Australians - it sure looks like that’s what’s happening. auspol Mark_Butler_MP
Feel sorry for him, but he wants to have my problem with health issue, due too legislation changes, where you have to pay to see speclist for op,I've waited 9yrs, to be able to have finance to pay for hip op, persevered with the pain,am happy as a pig in,mud,as am able too do
Labor advisor in a one party Labor jurisdiction suffering the effects of Labor health policy. Sad.
Former Ministerial advisor doesn’t have health insurance. OK then, explains a lot.
it's been hard....
Not unusual. Not just ACT. Not just pre-surgical patients. And not ok.
This is how our corrupted & lazy politicians make us all worse off with record immigration to suit big business. Try and get into a paediatrician in Sydney… People are dying, same as UK AlboMP even worse than LNP 😢 auspol healthcarecrisis HousingCrisis
Health care is either privately funded or rationed.
Somehow, we still find tens of billions a year for private healthcare providers, while vulnerable people suffer like this. There should have been a sunset clause in providing subsidies to the private sector.
All thanks to the liberals
