Pandemic drinking drives alcohol misuse treatment up 10% in England

The number of adults treated for alcohol misuse in England climbed 10% in the year to March 2022, fuelled by a rise in drinking during lockdown.shows this rise pushed the number of people receiving treatment for all types of substance misuse to 289,215, a seven-year high.

"Evidence shows that, for many people, the Covid-19 pandemic led to an increase in their drinking with those already drinking heavily most likely to have been drinking more." Nat Travis, national head of substance misuse at charity Turning Point, said they saw "a significant increase in the number of alcohol referrals" during lockdown, which is reflected in the latest figures.

In the year ending March 2022, 3,742 people died while receiving treatment, the highest number on record.

More rubish , who makes this crap up

I definitely drank more in lockdown

There was no pandemic, just a transfer of wealth and removal of liberties. A power grab.

Pandemic, or a violent gang forcing people to stay home and businesses to shut? Oh, and the BBC cheered on that violent gang.

Surprised it wasn’t higher.. especially with grim ToryBrokenBritain making life miserable for everybody..🤔

You should always change the word pandemic to lockdown, in every circumstance, and things make a lot more sense!

I became addicted to drinking brake fluid. But I can stop at anytime.

Mr Barclay said the government had to keep the cost of living for ordinary people in mind but an opportunity to end the disruption may now have been missed. He really is a heartless tnuc!!! Stop 3rd and 4th generation unemployed. That will leave more than enough for people who are prepared to earn a decent living. The tories just want to shut the NHS down, thats their agenda. Then they blame it on the workers. How many people can actually afford private health care. The minimum payments cover next to nothing. And what about people who can't even afford that?
