To be clear, abortion pills are not a replacement for the full spectrum of reproductive rights or services. Everyone should be able to have the abortion they seek: through clinics, telehealth, or at home, regardless of zip code or identity. And no one should be criminalized for pregnancy outcomes. But right now, no matter where you live, it can be difficult to get clinic-based abortion care.
The failure of abortion bans in the midterm elections affirmed what my colleagues and I know to be true: the majority of Americans support access to abortion. No court, politician, provider or pharmacy has the moral authority to deny an individual’s reproductive choice. And any ban on essential medications or modern procedures is not only unjust, it undermines the entire landscape of reproductive healthcare in the US.
While voters, activists and policy-makers continue to challenge bad laws and push for constitutional protections, I’m interested in finding ways we can take well-being into our own hands rather than placing it in the hands of our elected officials. With direct and to abortion pills, the majority of us can safely self-manage our own abortion, without visiting a doctor, and regardless of what the courts have to say about it.
