Ray Watkins Elementary School in Gold River was closed for a second day Wednesday after some students and staff reported itchiness, redness and welts.
“Island Health doesn’t feel that there is a significant risk but advised us to leave the school closed for another day while we work with them to find out what was behind the issue,” the Vancouver Island West School District said in a statement. The district said the move was made “out of an abundance of caution” and updates will be posted as more information becomes available.
Parents of affected students were notified about the situation Tuesday and asked to pick the students up. An environmental assessment at the school was scheduled for the afternoon. The Gold River Health Clinic directed those with symptoms to take a number of steps when they got home, including to shower or bathe, to change into clean clothes and wash the clothes they had been wearing, and to clean surfaces in their bedrooms.
Do the symptoms continue at home?
