'If you look at the obstacle course, you can see it’s quite challenging.”

The State hopes to recruit 1,000 new Gardaí but last year 17% of applicants failed because they were unable to pass a fitness test.

The Garda Physical Competency Test involves a bleeper test, push-ups, an obstacle course and push/ pull strength exercises - all of which must be completed three times in under three minutes and 20 secondsDublin Bay South TD Jim O’Callaghan said that the Government should consider if the test is currently too hard.

“I just think it’s something that we need to look at because it’s quite a vigorous fitness test,” he told“And particularly if you look at the obstacle course, you can see it’s quite challenging.” Police applicants in neighbouring jurisdictions also have to pass a fitness test and, although they vary in difficulty, Northern Ireland and Canada give their recruits more time.

“We need some solution to the Garda recruitment crisis and a 17% failure rate is pretty high,” Deputy O’Callaghan said.

Scrape that barrell !

what a joke

The recruitment crisis is not because of fitness training...taking that out will flood our stations with more fatties who love doing paperwork, drinking coffee, and snacking all day. It's the conditioning of the system, declining mental health & 0 respect from society = crisis...

The overwhelming majority are in visibly bad physical condition, particularly the women. Slobs the lot of them, usually with the manners and IQs to match.

Let's lower the fitness level of the street thugs also. That's problem solved. Where is my big consultancy fee please.

Just change the name of the course. Maybe 'walk in the park course' instead of obstacle course.

More examples of how ff & fg have destroyed the public services. Under pay & then change the regulations to get more ppl cause ppl who see the pay & conditions for new entrants won't join cause its the most difficult job in the state and there is no rewards now.

Fitness should be based on cardio via 2km timed run and basic ability to complete sit ups/ pushups that will indicate any weakness in a candidates physical ability . This is basic and very basic at that requirement.

Lower the standard of the people who have to deal with the worst of society the majority of the time. That sounds like a good idea. You will get nothing but soft people seeking power over others. Raise the standards and the pay.

why not cancel them altogether 😂😂😂

Bad idea to lower standards. Sends out the wrong message

Pay and resource the young entrants and that will go along way to helping recruitment. Same for the Defence Forces.

They could do with sending them on it every 5 years.

Doughnuts any one.

Keep the standards high please!

Garda fitness test 'too demanding' - Fianna Fáil TDFigures released to Jim O'Callaghan by Minister for Justice Simon Harris show that one-sixth of garda applicants last year failed the test Amazing how government's ideas to increase numbers of certain workers differs so much: - Garda = Lower Standards - Teachers = Lower Standards - Health Care = Forced Servitude However - Bankers = More Pay & Bigger Bonuses Shows their priorities HowIrelandWorks Right we want unhealthy Gardai that can’t pursue criminals I’d go as far and introduce a mandatory fitness test yearly for current Gardai, suspend them if they fail it. How many Gardai do you see that couldn’t run a 100 yards let alone pursue a criminal. Why they need a fitness test for sitting around the station. Because they're not walking the streets. My daughter watched as two taxi drivers fought each other on the street and when Gardai took her statement they told her they watched it from the station
