Figures released to Jim O'Callaghan by Minister for Justice Simon Harris show that one-sixth of garda applicants last year failed the test.
"I am advised by the Minister for Justice that as of early December, 55 candidates out of 315 had failed their Physical Competency Test ," he said.Mr O’Callaghan said the obstacle course must be completed three times, in under three minutes and 20 seconds and if you fail any component, you must repeat the whole test.
"I am concerned that the fitness test is too demanding, out of step with other jurisdictions and is becoming a growing factor blocking recruitment," he said. The PSNI physical test is similar to the An Garda Síochána assessment but allows four minutes and 30 seconds for the obstacle course.
The fitness standards for Garda entry requirements are very reasonable at present. You need to be fit for the role. The biggest problem with the fitness aspect of the Garda is - Trainee Garda will only have one test and will never be tested again in their whole career.

There is an age limit on joining the Guards they might want to look at that first. You can join if you are 34 on say the 16th of may but you cant join if you turn 35 on the 16th of May.

Fitness tests at this stage are defunct and not fit for purpose. Once height, eyesight and other physical requirements were made redundant, based on diversity mandates, then it undermines the whole process. A fit 6ft male garda is pointless when you have a 4ft female garda.

I think it's fine that it's too demanding. But if they're not to up to scratch no need to ditch them. Instead, note the fitness levels and they need to increase this and maintain it. Other Garda should also have to retain levels of fitness.
The fact that there is a test to 'mimic a struggle' would suggest the standard would need to be raised. This is a cheap statement, Recruitment for Gardai is failing due to poor pay and conditions. We pay Bankers more to ensure we get 'the right people'......... .

What needs to be introduced is a quarterly fitness test for serving members. There is no excuse for the physical shape of some of the guards. Some of their bellies are protruding out under their stab vests. It's a disgrace.

I was in a taxi with an unregualted driver who demanded double the money of the fare. I refused to pay and rang the gards while still in the car, basically got laughed at. The cunt was too lazy to leave station. I guarentee if the driver took me up to the station id be arrested.
There should be a minimum standard required at application and brought up to required operational fitness during training and on going age related fitness testing through their careers. Same as fire service and defence forces.
