He also calls on nurses and ambulance staff to 'honour commitments' over patient safety when they strike this week.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay is understood to be writing to the unions to request fresh talks over strike action - but sources say he still won't discuss increasing their wages.

Both nurses and ambulance workers are set to stage walkouts this week amid ongoing anger over pay and working conditions. The chief of the Royal College of Nursing, Pat Cullen, had suggested strikes would be called off if Mr Barclay opened up discussions over wages.Politics live:The minister also questioned the safety of the upcoming ambulance strikes when speaking to reporters last night.

Staff will still respond to the highest level of emergencies, and the government plans to bring in the armed forces to fill some of the gaps, with 1,200 troops expected to be deployed.

SteveBarclay says a wage increase of 19% is not reasonable but MPs claiming expenses for energy bills on second homes and Christmas parties is?

What’s the point of talks then

Sack em all and make healthcare private…. Problem solved

The Tories really are disgusting. Their self-serving, money grabbing, uncaring, don’t give a shit attitude to anyone but themselves disgusts me.

Will they sign on as bank nurses so they don’t loose any money I wonder

No point attending then! SteveBarclay unwilling to talk pay but his government are spending 7m a day housing illegals, billions on a war that ain't ours and letting companies like Starbucks avoid tax with a loophole. Maybe sort your house out Steve there would be some cash!

Seems claps and threats is all the despicable Tories have. General strike now.

Helpful.

Here’s an idea !! Reduce the wages of the train drivers who sit on their arses all day copping 65k and give it to the nurses 🤷‍♂️ simple !!!

Pointless, just leave them to it. When either you have had enough or they have had enough it will all be resolved. Simple as that.

No point then really. The strikes are on.

That’s like a football manager going in at half time to give a team talk and refusing to talk about football. What’s the point!?

So what’s the point?!? 🤷‍♂️

Then what’s the point?

How much you want? Yeah no worries we will just jack up taxes

Again, no solutions offered by Labour, just words. meaningless empty words....

The devil is in the details. So…looking more closely….they’ll have discussions.

And where would Labour recruit all these nurse’s & doctors from? And would Labour pay the 19% pay increase he didn’t answer……again! And wasn’t pushed for an answer by a Labour sympathetic Sky News

Instead of striking they should be waking up to reality and the fact that a lot of them have injected poison into people for the past 2 years with no questions asked.

JonAshworth Keir_Starmer come on Johnathan stop talking in rubbish platitudes both you & Keir need to come out in full support of the nurses & actually put a figure on what you would be prepared to offer.

so, apart from avoidance and gripping, what exactly are labour's proposals?

Ambulance drivers deserve a pay rise their wages are low. But not the nurses the RCN support, senior ones and management. Do like Scotland and pay the lower grade staff higher.

This right wing conservatives government has no intention of settling. It is only interested in destroying the NHS with lies and scaremongering. This will be privatisation on the cheap.

A union demanding 19% needs to get a grip on reality. Welsh controlled Labour are also striking so no Labour MP / supporter is in a position to criticise what is happening in England. NHS doesn’t need more funding, it needs the inefficient waste that exists removed.

TRAITOR ASHWORTH

In other words they would still go on strike because all you will say is the same as the Tories.

What does that mean?

The NHS with its bottomless pit of required funding combined with the welfare state could easily bring the country to bankruptcy The NHS needs reform, cost saving measures & improved productivity NOT MORE MONEY

Labour playing hop scotch and jump! They have no idea how they would handle these strikes apart from bankruptcy for the country and hyper inflation. I was there when Labour begged the IMF for a loan and inflation at 18-20%

Nurses pay has reduced by 20% in line with inflation over the last 10 years. Therefore 19% is a reasonable start to negotiations. The Conservatives must sit down with the unions and Trusts. In addition with the unions to thrash out a better working environment.

Meanwhile in Scotland, from mid November, Scottish Government negotiating with RCN & other NHS Scotland Unions…..why won’t English Government at Westminster do the same? Unions negotiated deal with Scot Gov

Typical Labour. They can talk until the cows come home and say nothing, just like the SNP.

it simply is not financially viable, there's approximately 300,000 NHS alone, with the rate of a 17% pay increase would result in around £720 per month/£8.500 An. Then you would get/bins/trains planes and automobiles. The pot is empty supporting invaders

If union members who can afford to strike for weeks on end they are already overpaid.

UKLabour need to put a number on what we would offer. Starmer is not backing 19% but what number does he support? This is really important.

Just make it all private……

How about staff it properly ! The Amt of money paid on and bank and agency staff is an absolutely disgrace. Get the figures for that and see how many extra nurses you could put into play.

The government are the real grinches. Whilst they have had huge pay rises since 2010 of 28% which is equivalent to 12% above cost of living the nurses have lost 20% in real terms. I know who I support and it's not the government

Tory gaslighting

So what's the point Mr Steve Barclay it sounds like you're trying to sway public opinions. These MPs go on tv talk a lot of bulshit and can't even answer a question directly. After 12yrs of neglect and running the country to wreck some of you pompous buffoons need to step down.

Pointless gaslighting exercise.

And cue the Tory bots saying nurses are paid enough.

Look, it’s yet another millionaire Tory MP telling the plebs what they can or can’t have. The working classes hold all the cards.

So it's a pointless gesture, made for no other reason than to allow the Tories to say they're trying to engage with the unions, when in fact they aren't engaging at all.

Probably won’t turn up in the post until after Xmas

The old Tory tricks of turning the public against the strikers no longer work.

England's ageing housing stock poses 'massive health risk' in cost of living crisisExperts warn that cold, damp and mould pose a 'massive health problem' this winter as people cannot afford to heat their homes. New data from the government and the social housing watchdog shows that conditions are already deteriorating for private and social tenants.
