: In the late 1960s and early 1970s, working as a page in the Windsor Public Library, I witnessed my workplace provide not only information and enlightenment, but also refuge for those on the margins – a role, sadly, more vital today than 50 years ago.
Today’s libraries fill even broader mandates as community hubs. That politicians can muse about such public spaces pulling in more money – despite the lessons about the public good supposedly learned from the earlier stages of the pandemic – may, yes, reflect political ideology and anti-intellectualism. It may also reflect a lack of knowledge of the breadth of functions of libraries.
On a recent visit to my local library, I observed people of all ages: Children doing school work, others using computers and people like myself using the quiet space, conducive to writing. Libraries are jewels in the crown of society. They should be protected and funded for what they are: an irreplaceable resource for all of us.Letters to the Editor should be exclusive to The Globe and Mail.
