New name better reflects the people the program serves, Health P.E.I. says.

Health P.E.I. is changing the name of Women’s Wellness and Sexual Health Services.CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Health P.E.I. has changed the name of Women’s Wellness and Sexual Health Services to Sexual Health, Options and Reproductive Services .

The health authority said the new name better reflects the population it serves in a more inclusive manner. “The language we use in health care is important,” said Andrew MacDougall, Health P.E.I.’s executive director for community health and seniors care. “If you’re trying to access the services of a program like this and find the name doesn’t include you, it can be barrier to receiving care."“This change will help to allow people of all gender identities to access needed health care,” said Anastasia Preston, trans community outreach co-ordinator for PEERS Alliance.

While the name has changed, the services provided by SHORS are the same. Those include pregnancy options counselling, abortion services, contraception counselling and care, prenatal care, sexual health education and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections screening and treatment, among other services. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years. Our SaltWire team is always watching out for the place we call home.
