Instead of accommodating Alesandrelli’s illnesses and injuries, however, supervisors placed him under surveillance, sent gun-toting investigators to his doctor’s office, and punished him with undesirable assignments and ultimately suspended him, states the suit, filed in Superior Court of Essex County.
“While on injury leave, Officer Alesandrelli was accused by his superiors in the department of taking a vacation in Costa Rica,” the lawsuit says, noting that the matter was turned over to internal affairs. A police supervisor insisted on a three-way call with Alesandrelli and his doctor to “confirm the contents of the doctor’s note,” the suit states.
Additionally, supervisors assigned Alesandrelli to work the COVID-19 visitor sign-in desk in the municipal building’s vestibule, which did not have heat, according to the suit. The investigators allegedly placed Alesandrelli under surveillance, followed him as he drove his personal vehicle and setting up “a sting operation” at his daughter’s high school softball games, the lawsuit says.
While questioning his doctor at his medical practice, internal affairs investigators “purposefully displayed their weapons and sought to use threatening body language to coerce damaging testimony,” the suit alleges.
