By Neha MathurNov 1 2022Reviewed by Danielle Ellis, B.Sc. In a recent study posted to the medRxiv* server, researchers estimated the serial interval and incubation period of monkeypox virus infections for the 2022 disease outbreak in the United States .

The serial interval is defined as the time lapsed since symptom onset in a primary case and the onset in the secondary case. It determines the effective reproduction number and forecasts the incidence of an infectious pathogen. Study findings A total of 57 case pairs met the study inclusion criteria, of which 40 had rash onset dates for primary and secondary cases. The serial interval for symptom onset ranged from two to 25 days among the index MPXV cases, partly due to variability in the nature and intensity of the contact. The overall mean estimated serial interval for symptom and rash onset was 8.5 and seven days, respectively.

Monoclonal antibody prevents malaria infection in African adultsOne dose of an antibody drug safely protected healthy, non-pregnant adults from malaria infection during an intense six-month malaria season in Mali, Africa, a National Institutes of Health clinical trial has found. The antibody was up to 88.2% effective at preventing infection over a 24-week period, demonstrating for the first time that a monoclonal antibody can prevent malaria infection in an endemic region. These findings were published today in The New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene 2022 Annual Meeting in Seattle.
