Bertha Gxowa loses staff as health workers return to Charlotte Maxeke hospital

The increased return of patients to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital for treatment, as well as the reopening of more services and the increased availability of beds, could spell trouble for Bertha Gxowa Hospital as it is set to lose CMJAH's internal medical staff.

Mahomed told City Press that the presence of his hospital's internal medical staff at the hospital was pivotal in growing Bertha Gxowa Hospital's capacity. The head of internal medicine admitted that the resignation of healthcare workers as well as early retirement, which he said many had opted for following the devastating fire, was a major concern across the board. He further explained that the call for the return of CMJAH staff to the facility was discussed at length with Berth Gxowa Hospital.

"The overall picture is that most of our public hospitals are understaffed as the staff establishments do not reflect the increased need caused by population growth. Vacancies need to be filled and extra posts created to fill the real need," he told City Press.
