Many of America’s biggest hospitals get their food from the likes of Aramark, a global caterer that also provides meals to schools and prisons. But more hospitals are starting to feed their patients better food

Save time by listening to our audio articles as you multitaskMore hospitals are starting to feed their patients better food. Intermountain, a non-profit group based in Utah that runs 32 hospitals across the Mountain West, has since 2019 served freshly made meals to patients. Chefs in proper kitchens now source local ingredients to serve in cafeterias. Doctors are consulted to meet patients’ dietary needs.

The link between eating well and good health has long been clear, says David Eisenberg, a nutrition specialist at the Harvard School of Public Health. Heart disease, which has a direct connection to diet, is America’s biggest killer. Roughly two-fifths of American adults are clinically obese, and over 14% suffer from diabetes. The right food can help patients avoid going back to hospital.

A decade ago Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield, outside Detroit, opened a teaching kitchen where staff could help patients plan affordable, healthy meals and learn how to cook them. The idea is now spreading widely. In October a conference for health and food professionals in Los Angeles will encourage the adoption of such kitchens. Participants will tour a new one that has just opened at’s hospital.

Challenges remain. Doctors do not get paid more if, owing to healthier eating, patients no longer need treatment. But at least, says Dr Eisenberg, insurers are starting to balk at the expense associated with chronically sick patients. Some healthy food for thought.

So are they getting rid of seed oils and other pollutants (such as glyphosates) out of the foods or..I don't know...something that might not kill you as fast?...pay wall... so didn't/wouldn't pay to read the whole article...anyway if it's in your rag..well it's missing something

There is more money for them in remedies than food as nutrition.

That’s because it’s the realm of public health. But nobody knows wth public health is.

It’s evident. All about pushing the pharmaceuticals. It’s easier to write a scrip than counsel on nutrition. I do hope this changes.

So! Many patients check in because of the direct or indirect ingestion of junk food. What good does it do to eat healthy for few days and then back to junk food? What does it take for someone to start looking at his/her health through different habits?

Now let’s do American school lunches. Children should eat healthy food.

It's not just Panera?

Low grade pet food

Both look like they would be better off skipping a few meals.

Whilst in my country 🇵🇬, there is a big disconnection between curative health and preventative health

Just goes to show you they make the connection

Preventative medicine doesn't require education by the patient population, but rather self-discipline so resistant to adoption. When the immediate reward of any vice imparts greater influence than long-term benefit, many people are content with the risk of the latter.

mostly Hungarian hospital food. I just do not eat there.

It used to be that medical schools didn't teach very much about alcoholism and drug addiction. Wonder if this has changed any.

Primary objective of Health-Care should be 'preventive', but that's bad for business.

Wow... wow wow... Gli danno pure da mangiare quando li curano?

Even Health Education n Health Management is missing from undergraduate n post graduate curriculum in most of the places.

Maybe schools should get decent food too?
