A consultant nephrologist at the National Hospital, Abuja, Dr. Abdulshahid Sarki, has said that hypertension, diabetes, and unconventional herbal medications are factors fuelling the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the country.

Speaking during the official launch of a non-governmental organisation, Omotayo Kidney Care Foundation, held in Abuja on Saturday, Sarki said, “It has been observed that hypertension and diabetes affect the cells in the kidney and overtime the whole kidney will be affected.

“In our settings, we have also observed that the proliferation of unregulated herbal medications affects the kidney. Over one or two decades ago, the majority of people who come down with kidney disease must have had ingestion of herbal medication which has been shown to contribute to the increased prevalence of chronic kidney disease.

“Based on the research done, the prevalence of the disease ranges from 10 percent to 22 percent, meaning that if you have 10 people, one of them must have kidney disease in Nigeria. “Unfortunately, it affects the young population from 25-45 years and these people are meant to be the workforce in a country.
