Ontario expanding program allowing paramedics to take patients to places other than ER

Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones says the province will expand a program that allows paramedics to avoid taking patients to the ER on every call as part of a "health system stability and recovery" plan that will be revealed this week. The Canadian PressThe first phase of the paramedic pilot project was launched in 2020 with programs in more than 40 municipalities. There are 444 municipalities in Ontario.

The minister made her remarks in a speech Wednesday to the Association of Municipalities Ontario conference in Ottawa, as a nurse staffing shortage has seen emergency departments across the province close for hours or days at a time throughout the summer. "We can no longer stand by and support a status quo that cannot respond to the current challenges the sector is facing," she said.

Initial results show patients are accessing care 17 times more quickly, and 94 per cent didn't go to the ER in the few days following care, Jones said.

Looks like I’ll be taking an Uber to the ER then…

This won’t end well!

Oh, this sounds safe…

… directly to the morgue

Tell them to also to stop using their sirens just to cross busy intersections. In Toronto it is an abuse and misuse.

We’ve had this program in Grey County off and on since 2014. Not sure how an already existing program is supposed to help stop current ER closures.

Yeah, the morgue. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Poor people already avoid taking ambulances anyways because the mandatory fees are obscene. I took a fucking cab to the hospital when I was dying.

So this is what Ontario's health care system has come to? Paramedics decide whether you're worth saving or not?

Sylvia Jones: ‘Badly injured and severely ill patients will be taken directly to the morgue where they will wait until they expire. This is just part of our plan to free up ER beds by finding efficiencies!’

We need accessible in-person walk-in clinics where non-emergency patients can go and be redirected to when an emergency department deems cases non-emergency.

In the in term I guess this is wise .The Ontario govt has been given deck of cards that Liberal govt had been battling poorly as well ! There is no answer giving those raises for hard work is acceptable but to think it is going to solve the crisis it is not! There is never enough

Frank Miller closed our Ontario Hospital System. In Toronto we have perhaps 3-4 dedicated sites where psychiatric patients could be taken in an emergency. These hospitals don't have the beds, premises, or staff to deal with the volumes. Note Bene! Paramedics won't get a raise.

Sylvia Jones: ‘Our plan to keep ERs open will include an ability for 911 operators to ignore your emergency calls. No emergencies, no ER visits! Problem solved!’

I need a lift to Vaughan mills, if we can do sirens so I can be there in 15 minutes that would be swell

WTF does that mean Ford?

Sylvia Jones warns ‘status quo’ in Ontario health care is not sustainableHealth Minister Sylvia Jones is signalling the prescription for what ails Ontario’s overburdened health-care system is to be more “innovative.” OMG…. Is she finally getting it!!! Not likely but let’s hope so. Why did you withhold all the Federal pandemic support to the system? Where did it go Dougie? Why not pay nurses fairly? You're choking the life out of our Healthcare system for corporate interests and your donors. I would say sham on you all but honestly, you don't have any.

YOU SAID IT: Privatization won't cure itThe writer disputes Health Minister Sylvia Jones' comment saying "all options are on the table" with the current government. Before universal health care we had a personal medical insurance. Universal health care for a few years was good. Doctors were in the system until more and more left for other countries and less and less were hired to replace them. Our doctors are great once you’re in the system.
