The Department of Health has confirmed a fourth case of Monkeypox which has been detected in South Africa on a 28-year-old male patient from the Western Cape. The patient travelled to Spain and returned to South Africa in the second week of August.The department of health spokesperson, Foster Mohale said, “
A polymerase chain reaction test was performed in a private pathology laboratory and the samples were submitted to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases for sequencing analysis. Public health response measures to prevent the spread of the infection, including contact tracing, have been instituted.The three previous cases were reported in Gauteng, Western Cape and Limpopo. All the cases were reported in males aged 30, 32 and 42 years.
Symptoms include fever, intense headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, swollen lymph nodes and a skin rash or lesions. The rash usually begins within one to three days of the start of a fever, and is most prevalent on the face, palms and soles of the feet. It can also be found on the mouth, genitals and eyes.
The Department of Health has said it will give more details on the government’s response to Monkeypox.
