Patients paying for private ops to avoid NHS waits

Long NHS waiting times appear to be pushing people into paying thousands of pounds for private treatment.

Patient groups warned there was a risk of a two-tier system being created, with the poorest losing out because they were the least likely to be able to afford to pay for treatment.Katie was told she would have to wait up to two years for her operation "I was pretty much bedbound. I was feeling very isolated and very lonely. My mental health was definitely suffering," she said."I couldn't wait that long. I would have lost my job. It is a very active job and I couldn't do it."

The PHIN data showed there were big variations in how much the levels of self-funded treatment had risen. She got one on the NHS, but had to go private for the other. She was only able to do this after a person heard about her case when they saw her interviewed by the BBC last year. But Ms Pugh, who is in her early 60s, said there were thousands of people in her position who were still suffering because they were unable to get treatment.

"People on the lowest incomes are the most likely to wait the longest for NHS treatment. This leads to a worse impact on their physical health, mental health and ability to work and care for loved ones.""The risk is we're left with a two-tier system where some people have to wait too long for care and others feel forced to bust the bank to get the care they need."

It should be privatised as too many people in the UK live off the government. So the end is indeed near and only those who actually work will be able to afford healthcare. The entitlement of people who add nothing to society but only takes is about to come to an end. Unavoidable

The same docs doing the private ops who should be doing the NHS ops…disgraceful?

Shock. Horror. We must be well into the “Silly Season” if the BBC considers this even newsworthy? It is, sadly, the inevitable consequence of successive Tory government’s underfunding the NHS and the general population realising that health is more important than savings.

I waited 10 years to have Nasal Polyps removed which were done recently by the NHS. Covid caused the delay ......

It's what the Tories have planned for many years now

This is a deliberate ploy of the government. Make waiting lists so long by starving the NHS of resources that people pay to go private. The more that do, the less relevant the NHS becomes.

Would it not make sense for access to NHS care to be means tested? I’m sure at least some %age of those on waiting lists could pay for private care using their own assets leaving more space for those who actually can’t afford it?

No one appreciates what they have until they don't

Not the nhs' s fault.Boris promised 40 new Hospital's..He didn't say in the U.K. Unfortunately.

Ok if u gotta wonga to splash out..

Best £143.80 a year I've paid. Cheaper than the BBC tax.

Is this News

Too many people for the NHS to deal with

Same people crying on here about waiting lists are the same who cried for more covid restrictions, own it

To be fair I feel like this is in principle is a good thing, those who can afford to should help those who can't, the NHS in the modern day can not provide free healthcare to evey member of the UK, its just not feasible

Why do you not report on the mostly good work the NHS does?

And have been for years

Amazing how these NHS doctors and resources can become available when there is money involved. Privatisation by the backdoor.

So plan is on course, create a long waiting list by under staffing, people become desperate so in comes the private sector to offer relief, NHS pay restrained for years, Private sector offer staff better pay, staff leave the NHS. Repeat cycle. We stand by and allow it to happen.

Smart

NHS is not fit for purpose, its state owned so designed to run at 95% capacity even without a pandemic, majority of staff are excellent and always have been it doesn't need more money although docs and nurses deserve a big pay rise, it needs reorganising

NHS is collapsing. If you are not dying, then forget it

That’s always been the plan. ToryBritain

Exactly what they want you to do, you’ll get used to paying private then it’s over understand those who feel they have no choice though

Previous Labour administration virtually eliminated waiting lists. The Tories hate the NHS .

This is exactly what the tories want. This is them winning and the entire working class population of the UK losing.

The end game is in sight.... American style insurance, incoming. This is how the NHS ends, not with a bang but with a buck

Kieth will nod this through.

This is what happens when you have years of chronic underinvestment and private providers taking money out of the system.

They should be able to to get their money back from the NHS

It's not an accident. It's not an oversight. It's not mismanagement or unforeseen circumstances. This is exactly what the Tories have planned all along.

George Cross NHS 🤦‍♂️🤣

This is because the NHS are having to treat immigrants and refugees some of them getting priority over British people. The NHS was struggling to cope before hundreds of thousands of unwanted immigrants entered the country illigally some of which have run away from secure hotels

It’s true for me. I have a heart condition and my parter had some issues that after MONTHS we couldn’t see a specialist. I’m going private now and don’t have the money for it…

You go into any gp and count the percentage of young/middle aged Muslim migrant women. Can hypochondria be treated?

Probably saving there lives from the clowns they have drafted in to the nhs ! One duty doctor ended up pumping air in to my vane as he did not no how to attach the flush to the tube then pulled air in the tube then twisted it on and flushed air in my vanes! Resulting in bad hart!

BBC avoids paying former royal nanny damages for 27 years.

Its a two year wait for a mental health assessment…

That was always the plan. They want the USA system.

That is unbelievable. It's both sad and scary. Why did it happen?

go private and meet all the former nhs trained doctors and nurses

This has been happening with the NHS gender clinic for years and years. The waits are horrific. Cost me over £10,000 so far.

Producer capture … at its best

That's the whole idea

It's starting... They've managed to turn people against the NHS and soon they'll convince people that it's not worth paying for and they'll privatise it.

Does this also include dental treatment?

Envy of the world.

Just white people?
