HEALTH chiefs in the Canaries have issued an urgent alert as the temperature across the islands is set to soar into the mid-30s and more.

They are urging holidaymakers to take extra special care in the sun and not to risk heatstroke or severe sunburn.People are being urged to stay in cool places during the hottest parts of the dayThe Ministry of Health of the Government of thehas activated health risk notices between July 9 and 11 in different municipalities of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Palma

A spokesperson said: "The plan is aimed at the entire population, and especially designed for the population groups most vulnerable to intense heat, such as the elderly, children and people with chronic pathologies. "All hospitals and the Canary Islands Emergency Service have staff designated and specially trained to deal with and effectively coordinate services in the event of a possible heat wave, as well as the communication channels established for adequate surveillance."
