Mississauga’s only publicly funded eating-disorder program for adult patients is no longer accepting new entrants after the indefinite absence of its medical director.
The hospital, one of two in the Greater Toronto Area to offer OHIP-covered eating-disorder care for adults, said the pause is due to “an unplanned absence by one of two specialists who support this program.” It is also due to the hospital’s effort to manage “increasing volumes and acuity” of patients, said Lyndsay Carter, a spokesperson for Trillium Health Partners, in an email.
Staab has since been released on bail, conditions of which were imposed on March 1. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 8. “It goes all the way back down to the resources, and there aren’t enough available,” Preskow said. She said it appears there is no succession planning if a program were to lose a practising physician — an issue that she argues happens more frequently with eating-disorder care than other branches of medicine. She said this is partly because there are not enough health-care workers trained in eating-disorder care.
