Victoria's mental health care industry is facing a crisis as workers question whether it's worth staying in an industry where they're overworked and don't feel adequately compensated.

"The abuse they've sustained, the neglect they've experienced, the racism they've experienced — we see all of their trauma, they talk to us about all of their worst experiences," she said."And then we have to say 'I'm sorry, I don't have the services to [help] you', and that's the bit that gets me — that's the bit that I get angry about.", but mental health is facing its own crisis.

"[The Victorian government] basically said they're going to implement all of the recommendations from the royal commission," Ms Gallaher said. Those that are left on the frontline tend to be junior staff, filling roles once reserved for those with more experience.Health and Community Services Union secretary Paul Healey said new job vacancies were increasingly being advertised online as a result of the royal commission.

Mental health workers in the public health system have been waiting for a pay rise throughout the pandemic. Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council CEO Craig Wallace is concerned about the impact of staffing shortages on patients and consumers.

The government cancelled all peer driven spaces I found safe during lockdowns ie they weren't given funding. No one cared about the most vulnerable of our society, then. The mh sector is in dire straits because consumers are being abused, mistreated and dismissed.

Sorry folks Gov't (any gov't) don't believe in mental illness.

To be crystal clear: Workforces who carry out violent, oppressive practices do NOT need advocates. Certainly not a pay rise. As a survivor of abuse in that system, HACSU’s messaging is an affront to reform, equal rights & safety. EndSeclusion EndRestraint

The LiberalAus’s disgraceful treatment of the tertiary sector during the pandemic, & the increase in university fees (university needs to be free) doesn’t help. How else are new workers trained? We need highly qualified workers who actually care for patients. Not more apps.

As a community mental health nurse, I am frustrated that the government still hasn’t funded CMHN’s under Medicare. If they did, GP clinics could by offer appts with us which reduces need for crisis care. This was the MHNIPS program until funding was redirected. ACMHN

Ah! So the current (any many) mental health advocates are not doing there job, eh? Seems to me that as soon as any 'advocate' gets funding for that, the advocacy disappears, because the money disappears into developing policy and procedures, not actual advocacy.

advocate for mental health ?

Leftist policies don’t work and then everyone complains about how difficult their job is. Same thing happening in education.

Uh, the government, who is paying you a 3.5k bonus for showing up during the pandemic.

That will help the already broken mental health sector worker leaving, it took me 15 years to get a diagnosis

Of course there’s no mention of the two years of unnecessary lockdowns, muzzles, police violence and coerced vaccinations. And just remember, it’s never Dans fault.
