Public health advocates and experts warn that Canada needs to do more than decriminalize drugs to bring down overdose deaths.

And those figures are despite all of the country's drugs coming from a black market.

Instead, Goulão is focused on expanding harm reduction services, like drug checking and safe consumption sites, which are in their infancy in Portugal. "You in Canada, and the Americans, you are living a moment that is similar to our epidemic in heroin in the '90s … This is, in my view, a window of opportunity to change things."Although Switzerland has yet to decriminalize drugs, it took a groundbreaking step toward safe supply in 1994 by prescribing pharmaceutical-grade heroin to long-term users.

So basically Canada wants drug addicts?

Substance addiction is a mental health disorder.

These people don't need to be arrested or a have a place to do drugs, they need mental health services and housing services and rehabilitation services.

This is going to make things much worse

Canadian government need to get serious people are dying from drug overdoses. A drug addict is only harming himself or herself. So compassion is needed just decriminalization let the addicts have clean supply of drugs.

I say more fatherless homes will help

And it promotes drug induced schizophrenia...horrible idea

One wonders if those who need help in whatever capacity received it - mental health / physical health / employment, if they would be self-medicating with drugs or alcohol. People need hope; something to do, something to look forward to. I find this very sad.

SISAREENABLERS

They want more of us to die from fentanyl to hide the vaccine mass casualties.

How the heck do you solve the drug problem by rewarding people with more and easy access to drugs …doesn’t seem logical .

LMFAO arrest the criminals don’t make the shit legal

Go watch Seattle is Dying. It's a documentary made by a local News team that investigates what this same idea did to Seattle.

The underlying causes of drug use is not being addressed just the unsafe drugs themselves.

Harm reduction is a short sighted policy that leads to increased drug use and ultimately causes more suffering, all because of the idolatry of mere continued existence.

Harm reduction alone is not enough.

How about decreasing other deaths? Your poison of choice, alcohol, is killing more than illicit drugs. Vaping could save about 95% of smokers lives. Where's the consistency in 'saving lives'?

Tired of the advocates that really don't want anything but legalization of drugs. We sat here and watched safe legal Oxycontin, overprescribing doctors, big pharma get blamed for this overdose crisis, pain meds taken away from pain patients, now back screaming for 'safe drugs'.

Don't you know that Muslims are being persecuted in India, religious places of worship are being confiscated, indiscriminate killings are taking place? Already the leaders of the ruling party have spoken insultingly about the supreme leader of the Muslims?

So incredibly stupid.

More accessible drugs are what we need?

Please. Addicts are only people when the right can point to them as a reason to get out of wearing a mask and not coughing on doorknobs all day. Now that nobody has to wear one we're back to 'can't they just not do drugs?'
