New cases of COVID-19 increased 36.67% in Lake County to 331.64 per 100,000 residents in the week ending May 5, according to the CDC. The county has moved from a low to medium risk level, as has the entire Chicago area.

“We know the omicron variant to be very infectious,” Pfister said. “An omicron variant will be more infectious as it mutates. The good news is we’re not seeing hospitalizations increase, and we’re not seeing an increase in deaths.”

In suburban Cook County, there were 259.31 new cases, a 45.8% increase from the previous week, according to the CDC. New infections jumped 45.84% in McHenry County, with 259.41 new cases per 100,000 residents on a rolling seven day average Karen Mahnke, the chief nursing executive at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, said in an email loosening restrictions like optional mask wearing and more individuals congregating in large settings are other reasons for the growth in new cases.
