Health experts recommend against washing chicken before cooking it because that can spread harmful bacteria. But if you’re among the nearly 70 percent of people who do, there are ways to make it safer.

The height of the faucet above the chicken had the largest effect. If the water fell 40 centimeters before hitting a chicken breast or thigh, the germs traveled farther than for faucets just 15 centimeters above the chicken.

In tests involving the higher faucets, droplets of water splashed more than 22 centimeters in the air, contaminating much of the surrounding area. For lower faucets, droplets splashed only about 5 centimeters high, and there was comparatively little sign of contamination making it to nearby surfaces.

The researchers also found that if they flicked on a faucet, the initial burst of water sent contaminated spray flying. Turning it on gradually reduced the spray. The pliability of chicken was also important. Water hitting the chicken creates a small divot in the soft surface, which shoots the splatter farther than it would if the chicken didn’t deform. Keeping the water pressure turned down reduces the dimpling and resulting germ spread.

Cooking chicken correctly will destroy pathogens like salmonella, so washing is not necessary. Make certain the uncooked bird is kept separate in the fridge and everything will be fine.

Use a bowl with cool water and a tablespoon of white vinegar to rinse chicken. No splashing

Keep them in check by not washing poultry. Don’t spread the bacteria around the kitchen. From package to cooking vessel. Then wash hands and don’t touch it again until it’s cooked. Or use tongs and then wash those

this is a missed opportunity to educate people that most chicken with salmonella comes from factory farming and it probably totally safe to wash your farmer's market bought chicken however you want.

I feel like this is a space that THEY tried to intrude into and were dispelled with quickness and efficiency. The people who wash chicken are already much much cleaner than the ✨ community ✨ on which this science and these concerns are based. Teach yourselves, we knew🤭

You know the safest way to not get infected by the bacteria in chicken? Let the chicken live and eat vegetables 🥦. Save the planet!

I always soak the chicken in a bowl with water, lemon, and vinegar. I think that's a good way IMHO
