A Saskatoon family says the health-care system failed their 25-year-old son in the months leading to a fatal assault on his girlfriend.

The young couple moved in together in the summer of 2021. Bryan said his son began having "intrusive thoughts" by late fall."He talked to her [in December] and let her know that he was having these intrusive thoughts. And that's when [she] and Thomas came to us and let us know."

Sanche took Thomas to the emergency room at Royal University Hospital on Dec. 18 and then again on Feb. 9. The first trip came after speaking with Thomas's psychologist, who was concerned that he was in a "mental health crisis" and should go to a hospital, the timeline said. "And so those of us who love him, we could see the signs of agitation or anxiety building up in him. But someone who doesn't know him can't magically read his mind.""We were hoping he'd be admitted to the Dube Centre, where he could be in a secure place and get some professional help. Hopefully see a psychiatrist and help to determine what's going on so that these things could be addressed medically first, and then through counselling," she said.

"They took him to the correctional centre where they put him in a jail cell, still not mentally stable from the psychosis or whatever. It started all of this. So it went from a traumatic situation to adding more and more layers of trauma. And now, a month later, he is still in the corrections centre. He's on a med unit on suicide watch."

The Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford, the province's main inpatient mental health facility, includes 188 psychiatric rehabilitation beds and a 96-room secure wing for offenders living with mental health issues. Government data from April 1 shows 48 of the 96 corrections beds and 166 of the 188 non-corrections rehabilitation beds were operational.

Oh good. Another boyfriend about to claim NCR and another woman dead. Mental health or not, you took a life, do the time.

No such thing as accountability anymore eh

Very sad! Poorly written article by cbc.

Start with your Premier and his ignorance about health care.

This is a bush league article. “..we believe it is inappropriate for anyone, including the CBC and us, to comment until evidence from the police investigation becomes available”. So they push it through with minimal info and zero facts for clicks. I hate the CBC.

Wow you are erasing the victim, Emily Sanche, and manufacturing sympathy for the murderer. Shameful.

Wondering if they and their families and their friends voted for a conservative government that cut healthcare funding? So very tired of people who refuse to take accountability or act when they can but instead choose to do nothing and then blame everyone else instead.

So it’s not his fault… riiiight

The murderer may have some culpability here…

All in all this is a sad story. One that should be looked at closely. Prior a guy that was successfully in a psychiatric school program. Has a completely delusional psychological break and can not get help. Resulting is his GF death. Was outside substance a factor ? Covid? Why?

Forget it; this system is broken a long time ago; we have one right now going nuts and there is nothing you can do; waiting for the worse to happen

What a dogshit article, headline, and tweet. RIP to his victim.

Commenting from Saskatoon. Holy disrespectful Tweet😟. I always wondered why so many people dislike CBC - now I know.....

A very sad story. I'm not sure that you can force someone into treatment if they choose not to.

Who’s the victim? Come on now. Don’t throw shade over the young women’s death, trying to make the person responsible for her death, become the victim.

Hate to break it to anyone, but when we say mental health must be accessible, that means for everyone. Many men who perpetrate the violence and many women who suffer from it would be much better off if we didn’t moralize who needs help and who doesn’t.

This is such a weird article. Rest In Peace, Emily.

This story lacks so much context, and it’s completely irresponsible for you to publish it. Just as the young woman’s family said.

Facts our health system is broken I’ve been waiting 6+ years for a psychiatrist to help me with my mental illnesses and I’m still here waiting for help. That’s just the surface of how our health system is broken.

“But someone who doesn't know him can't magically read his mind.' Terrible situation, the system can’t predict what someone is going to do though.

Wow you really hate women and want to coddle abusers don’t you. defundCBC

Parents: “While we are eager to understand the events that led to our daughter's tragic death, we believe it is inappropriate for anyone, including the CBC and us, to comment until evidence from the police investigation becomes available,'

🙏🏽

CBC should reconsider the photo they're using in this story. From the photo, it looks like he was the one who was murdered. Even though I empathize with his mental health issues, I don't understand how CBC can totally erase the woman at the centre of this story.

Ted Bundys family said the same stuff

Heartbreaking 💔

You know, it's quite possible he's just a murderer with OCD symptoms. Some murders have arthritis or kidney disease.

That is such a horrible outcome for what could have likely been prevented.

Umm, I think the dude who murdered his girlfriend/commonlaw wife failed.

Nothing threatens and shuts a doctor/nurses down more than when a patient with Chronic illness shows up with a detailed list to advocate for themselves. It’s not doctor google it’s our experience we must be specialist since you all shut us down! Including pain patients.

If I was his family I would be checking his OCD medication. Maybe it was made improperly leaving a side effect.

You cannot make adults get help if they don’t think they need it or refuse to access it. The trouble is that they take innocent people down with them into the spiral. That is the crime for which they need to be held accountable.

Blame anyone but the son I guess

💔

Or maybe it was the family that raised the murderer that failed. 🤷‍♂️
