A new study found poor access to mental health supports and cultural stigmas are holding many racialized women back from healing during the pandemic.

The research found the majority of respondents were already struggling with mental health before COVID-19 struck and service providers now can't keep up with the increased demand.

But the stigma surrounding mental health care was still the number one reason why respondents didn't seek it out, she says, adding that financial barriers were also high on the list. The study was done online and included responses from 103 women and interviews with five service providers. The researchers warn the data cannot be considered reflective of the wider population of racialized women in Canada due to sample sizes and lack of randomization.

That finding resonated with Meghan Watson, a registered psychotherapist and founder of Bloom Psychology & Wellness, in Toronto.Watson opened Bloom during the pandemic in 2020, and only a couple of months later she had to stop accepting new patients. Several of her clinical colleagues at Bloom also have full schedules, she says.

Jasmeet Chagger, left, and Maneet Chahal are the founders of SOCH, a non-profit aimed at increasing access to mental health services and battling the stigma against reaching out for help among South Asian communities in Peel Region. During the pandemic, SOCH led well-attended group sessions for women living in multi-generational homes with their in-laws and other extended family, something common in South-Asian Canadian households, she says. The sessions helped participants grapple with challenges of working from home, boundaries and other issues..But in spite of the increasing need for mental health supports, not all respondents felt like they could seek help.

I'm one of those! I had help, but all was taken after the last election! I suffer from a brain injury, BPD, depression, colitis, and scoliosis. I need severe help now the Health Minister took it all off the Sunshine Coast. I'd like to bill him for it.

I know many many white people that suffer the same fate. Our system is an absolute failure. quitmakingitaboutrace

Can’t you stop race baiting?

People of color, women of color, let's do better. PLEASE let's do better.

If we go by racial mental health concerns, I think white men have the highest suicide rate. So why if we must make it about race, do we not make it about them?

An even newer study published by 'experts' found reading CBC propaganda causes mental illness

Is there not a stigma surrounding this with all groups? Is there not poor access to mental health resourcea all over? Who writes your moronic BS, CBC? What country do you import your low paid workers from?

Isn't this the same that holds everyone back? Why do you always report how this impacts gay, one-legged women with a lisp more than others? 'CBC reports that slow escalators have more of a negative impact on black men who don't own brown shoes'. FO with the BS.

🇨🇦My Mental Health Disability: From 2005 6 doctors did not tell me, Mental Health Court did not tell me, Health Canada fired me in March 2014, and in October 2018 I found out I had mild Schizophrenia given diagnosis of 2005 and 2007.🇨🇦

Always making it about race.

Applies to men also

Why is everything about race ?

Carry your cross and become stronger through faith. Or, blame others. Whatever. And invest in mental health care. Both are true.
