Local corporations must invest in rural health care | Opinion

, the closure of rural hospitals and the loss of health care workers in the region is a matter of life or death.

Unfortunately, it is not just the distance to a hospital that puts residents at risk. With less access to general practitioners and preventative care than people in cities, rural residents are at a greater risk of developing health complications and finding themselves in need of emergency medical treatment.

Texas and the Department of Health and Human Services released funds to support rural hospitals during the pandemic. These funds were a great start to addressing the issue. However, more must be done on the ground to match funds with opportunities and build a pipeline of doctors and facilities for our rural residents. Addressing this gap requires businesses and local entities to come together and work toward a solution.
