Researchers at Brisbane’s Prince Charles Hospital are recruiting for a clinical trial which hopes to show how treating gut health can help cure insomnia.

Researchers are actively recruiting for an Australian-first trial that is trying to find out if a gut microbiome treatment can help people with chronic insomnia.

Dr Curtin said they hoped with this trial they would be able to confirm this treatment did have some benefit for people with clinical insomnia. “We’ve been working on autoimmune disease for quite some time, on bacterial combinations to treat IBS and other inflammatory conditions,” Dr Finlayson said.“All of the bacteria we selected for this treatment are already found in the human body, we just put them together in a combination which attempts to modulate the microbiome in a beneficial way.”He said they had realised there might be a benefit for insomnia patients when they got unexpected results from an earlier trial.

The cost tot the economy has been estimated as up to $51 billion annually, incorporating the cost of medical treatment and the cost to wellbeing.
