A federal judge is considering whether the man who tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan should be unconditionally released from the court-imposed restrictions he’s been living under, including having doctors oversee his medication and therapy.

Since Hinckley, 66, moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, from a Washington hospital in 2016, the court-imposed conditions have included doctors and therapists overseeing his psychiatric medication and deciding how often he attends individual and group therapy sessions. Hinckley also can’t have a gun. And he can’t contact Reagan’s children, other victims or their families, or actress Jodie Foster, who he was obsessed with at the time of the 1981 shooting.

A status conference is scheduled for Monday before U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman in Washington.Attorney Barry Levine has asked for unconditional release, saying Hinckley no longer poses a threat. A 2020 violence risk assessment conducted on behalf of Washington’s Department of Behavioral Health concluded that Hinckley would not pose a danger.

The U.S. government opposed ending restrictions as of a May court filing, and retained an expert to determined whether or not Hinckley would pose a danger to himself or others if unconditionally released. Findings from such an examination have not been filed in court. Hinckley was 25 when he shot and wounded the 40th U.S. president outside a Washington hotel. The shooting paralyzed Reagan press secretary James Brady, who died in 2014. It also injured Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy and Washington police officer Thomas Delahanty.

Jurors decided Hinckley was suffering from acute psychosis and found him not guilty by reason of insanity, saying he needed treatment and not life in prison.

If he is 'well, ' he should go directly to a federal prison for the rest of his life.

very interesting how people react to this vs how they reacted to Sirhan Sirhan *possibly* being paroled, because Reagan ins't liked, RFK was

I would say a complete release with no support system is probably not the way to go. The restrictions would probably help him maintain stability and function as normally as possible as much as they would prevent him from trying to hurt others. 1

I'm doubting if he even did it. The place was crawling with secret service. How could a deranged person carry out such a complex crime?

Well, he's no longer a threat to Reagan. But, he is not incarcerated because he's a threat, his incarceration is him being punished for attempting to murder someone because they were important. It's important for American justice that this guy dies in prison.

If he had only been a millimeter to the left this country would have been WAY better off today. Reagan was the beginning to this horrible chain of events that made this country a shitshow today.

Perhaps he was swept up by the fervent climate of his time...

matteroffacttv As dangerous & evil since Monday March 30th 1981!

He should have doctors overseeing him for the rest of his life. He tried to assassinate our President that is a life sentence!

How does Jodie Foster feel about this? He was also obsessed with her which is why he tried to kill President Reagan.

he should be exonerated of all wrongdoing. Hinkley is a true Patriot

The failed ex-presidency of Trump seems to be a greater danger to society then Hinckley. Hell, Trump didn't want to just kill Biden's presidency but a shit load of congressmen and women as well.

No. No matter what you think of the president, you don’t attack him. Yes, In the Middle Ages, you would be set free, after the removal of your head from your body, but that was so long ago.

So a dude is caught with a small bag of weed and he gets life but this chap who tried to kill POTUS may walk FREE.....epic just...

Well Reagan is dead, so yeah, probably harmless

First, Sirhan Sirhan, now Hinckley? 😬

We need to audit federal judges

NO!

Hinckley should have remained in solitary.
