But Aged Care Services Minister Richard Colbeck says the tender process does not necessarily mean state health system involvement will end. | rachelclun

Australia’s peak medical body has warned a plan to put assessments of elderly Australians’ care needs out to tender risks dumbing down the expert teams involved and putting profits ahead of patient wellbeing.

Aged care assessment teams work out whether elderly Australians could stay in their own home with more support or require residential care. They operate out of public hospitals and include state-employed nurses, geriatricians and social workers. Sydney Local Health District aged health community services manager Helen Hislop said having ACAT members embedded in the hospital system meant they had access to specialists for further help and could easily view a patient’s public health history. Combined with conversations with their GP, that helped create a richer picture of their health issues.

Dr Khorshid said the AMA agreed the system should be streamlined so there were no longer two assessment processes. But he said the commission’s report was not necessarily recommending getting rid of the state-run ACAT.

broomstick33 rachelclun Makes me concerned that too many voters are still unaware of the depth & significance of the neglect & malfeasance of this govt. Our future prosperity & very democracy is at risk; if lost, history shows it may not be unrecoverable. Pay attention. Keating’s banana republic awaits.

rachelclun Sounds like they are kicking the $33 million dollars NDIS Independent Assessment contracts across to aged care.

rachelclun Why would anyone believe this federal government? Seriously, why would you.

rachelclun It our definitely ensure State involvement. Don't trust Colbeck, of DoH anxiety to privatise.

Premier Gutwein to hand over portfolios and shift focus to his healthTasmania's Premier attributed his recent health crisis to overwork and will hand over several portfolios to colleagues in order to take better care of himself. I disagree with pretty much all of his party’s views, but Premier Gutwein has steered Tasmania on a solid path through Covid, and I wish him a speedy recovery taspol I wish Gutwein would stop dumbing Tasmanians down and making them sick. Defunding public health & education has really damaged Tassie when the whole island could be thriving. Lost opportunity to help everyone do better. In other words TAS Health is fked!
