In the past two weeks, children and teenagers have made up more than one-third of cases, with 70 infections among 10 to 19-year-olds in the past 24 hours, and almost 400 in the last week.saying it will wait to see how case numbers track over the next few weeks But University of Sydney infectious diseases specialist Robert Booy said it was important to recognise Australia has had nearly 1000 adult COVID-19 deaths, but none in children and the great majority don’t contract serious disease.Only a handful of children have long-term symptoms, he said, noting a new study of more than 1700 British children where only 4.4 per cent had symptoms that lasted more than four weeks.
“When we have more than 80 per cent of adults vaccinated next year, that’s we can start vaccinating children,” he said.
