Australia news LIVE: Canberra lockdown to begin as ACT records one local COVID-19 case; NSW records 345 new local cases; Victoria records 21 new cases

The nation’s capital will enter a seven day lockdown from 5pm today after a positive COVID-19 case had been infectious in the community.

Canberrans will be asked to only leave their homes for essential reasons – essential employment, healthcare , essential groceries and supplies and up to one hour of outdoor exercise. Mandatory mask wearing will be reintroduced. “We want to make sure we have enough points of access across all of NSW and in particular in and around those areas of concern,” she said.NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mick Willing said the Commissioner was currently working with government officials and regional commanders across the state and would present a plan back to the crisis cabinet on Friday afternoon.

“I’m hoping that people will take up that opportunity and we get the vast majority of South Australians vaccinated by Christmas.” There are currently 374 COVID-19 cases in NSW’s hospitals including 62 people in intensive care. Twenty-nine require ventilation.Three new cases in Dubbo, 24 in Hunter as lockdown extendedCases are continuing to be detected in some parts of regional NSW, prompting Premier Gladys Berejiklian to confirm the Hunter lockdown will be extended.
