NSW Health alerts about COVID-19 exposure sites have lagged by up to four days behind shopping centre warnings to staff and customers.
University of NSW epidemiologist Professor Mary-Louise McLaws said there are hundreds of potential contacts for every case. She said it was a duty of care to alert the public of potential hot spots as early as possible. “However, considering the virulent nature of the Delta strain of COVID we suggest that all people in the centre over the past few days get a test at the earliest opportunity.”
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant on Tuesday said the identification of exposure sites could be delayed if people were unwell for a period before they tested positive. Investigators then had to work back through all the venues they had visited since two days before their symptoms began.
