The ruling by Victoria’s Police Registration and Services Board to overturn a decision to dismiss Constable John Edney has divided opinion. Some police say it has undermined public confidence, while others believe the officer is deserving of compassion.

The board said the conduct of the two other officers was worse and Constable Edney believed it was necessary for him to hit Mr Goutzoulas’ legs with his baton and place his foot on his head. While the other officers sprayed Mr Goutzoulas, Constable Edney went inside his home to gather his belongings for hospital.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said the registration board was independent and its task was to assess cases objectively and apply employment law principles. “Edney was not part of that conduct. I am glad that Edney will be re-trained as it has always been my intention for police to learn how to deal with mental health patients.”In submissions to the board, Constable Edney said he had the “best of intentions”, but got it wrong.

Former principal solicitor at Victoria’s police accountability project and academic researcher Tamar Hopkins said different standards were applied to police.“There’s zero tolerance for members of the public who assault police, but there’s such a different approach taken to police officers who engage in violence,” Ms Hopkins said.

“There is a clear need to reconsider how police oversight in Victoria is undertaken,” Dr Maguire said.A spokesperson said the review was an opportunity to redesign the current system to meet community expectations for the “transparent and effective management of complaints” and “oversight of the exercise of significant police powers”.

Jesus, what do you have to do to be dismissed from the police force?

Fuck him ! What if the poor victim had a co-morbid medical condition and ended up dead ? No way should police overstep the appropriate response. If he's having 'a bad day', he should go home and cool off.

This is another example of real issues that the people should be protesting against. Real Life - Real Issues!

As we know government reviews or inquiries in Victoria find zero ask the Coates enquiry as an example! Only a Royal commission inquiry that has no Victorian government involvement would suffice!

Disgraceful behaviour. They are supposed to be professionals held to a higher standard

'This matter...involves an error of judgment in the heat or agony of the moment'. Yeah, let's see anyone other than a Police Officer get away with that argument.

Never trust police. Never call the cops.

🙄

Public confidence in the force is already low. Look at the recent acts where police snatched a mobile phone of an elderly women sitting on a park bench, or the need to handcuff a mother in her own home infront of her child just for posting on social media. It goes on.

Cops are corrupt. They blatantly lied in their statements and depositions. They were proven wrong by CCTV. Any employee in any corporate would have been sacked. Gobbo, stomping on people’s heads, breaking bookstore resident arms, this, and that’s what made the news
