Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga told City Press on Wednesday that the two departments were scheduled to meet on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the extension.
The extension of the programme would allow those who had missed the opportunity to get jabs initially to be vaccinated. On Sunday, the Northern Cape had only achieved 50% of the target population, which according to the department’s report was 14 452. On July 2 it had only vaccinated 7 688 people. He also said ordinary people were being turned away from vaccination sites because their names did not appear on the EVDS. Motshekga reiterated the stance that after vaccinations are completed all teachers would be expected back at school. Last year, the department allowed some teachers with comorbidities to work from home. However, Motshekga said because everyone in the sector had been given a chance to be vaccinated, no one would be expected to work from home now.
