Seminar told Travellers were disproportionately affected during the pandemic

, and other countries, are “underestimating” a “tsunami of mental health issues that are emerging” as the pandemic continues, the executive director of the World Health Organisation’s emergency programme has warned., addressing an event hosted by the Galway Traveller Movement , expressed “shock” at the suicide rate among the Traveller community - at six times that of the general population, saying he had not known it was so high.

The webinar, titled Build Homes, Build Health, Build Hope, heard Travellers had been disproportionately affected during the pandemic with many in overcrowded, unsanitary housing with limited access to healthcare. Many Traveller children had no access to online-learning during school closures. “But…there are deep biases in the way systems work….The systems are driven by racist bias, ethnic bias, class bias. That then becomes very insidious and it’s very hard to change because no one sees themselves as a racist.”

Mental issues caused by lockdowns

Is July traveller awareness month or what?

What?!…. And were the WHO ahead of the HSE on this? Preaching fear and terror for 16 months and putting people out of work/social life and into debt has completely obvious consequences. Now they belatedly join the dots.

No shit sherlock.

Ignoring is not underestimating it

Insert “and ignoring”.
