Opinion: Mum’s cancer fight was the inspiration behind Cordner’s toughness

. He was and is their hero: the single dad who raised two young men after losing his wife; the dad who allowed a tear to escape as a highly emotional Boyd praised his dedication and thanked him for his love during his farewell media conference on Monday.

“I get very emotional when I talk about Mum,” Dane said. “Mum fought and fought at the end when she was battling breast cancer. She did it for her boys, to hang on to be with us and Dad. She wanted the extra time with us ... not to leave us, and she did everything she could to get every minute with us.

Boyd Cordner does it tough at his retirement announcement. Inset, with mum Lanai, dad Chris and brother Dane; and the boys in their junior footy days.“If you want the truth, and if you want to know where the edge comes from, the toughness ... his trademark, it was from Mum. Dad did everything for us boys, but that’s what Mum gave Boyd. Players either have heart or they don’t, and Boyd’s heart and will to do anything it took to play, to win, to be tough, it came from Mum.

“As boys we saw how we were given so much by them, and he learnt how to be a giver. It’s what made Boyd such an unbelievable leader.”. He passed away just over a year ago after suffering a head injury on the field.
