Prime Minister Scott Morrison has doubled down on his ultra-cautious approach to opening Australia's international borders arguing safety must come first. Mr Morrison has defended the border ban imposed on India as one of the nation's top doctors joins the push for a reopening plan. Former deputy chief medical officer Dr Nick Coatsworth has argued against keeping Australia’s quasi-elimination strategy in place and has called on Mr Morrison to outline an opening plan.
“It’s going to be a false idol in 2022-2023 when the pandemic is still raging around the world and yet the majority of our population is vaccinated," he said. “We need a stepwise, methodical and cautious process to open up our international borders and to a degree accept COVID-19 circulating within our community.
