'I am one of the lucky ones,' says Marco, a young Vancouver survivor of COVID-19. He has been dealing with long term effects of the disease such as difficulty breathing and post-exertion fatigue.

Dr. Zachary Schwartz is the lead physician of the COVID-19 recovery clinic at Vancouver General Hospital, one of three new clinics in B.C. devoted to treating patients suffering long-term health issues from the disease.

“We have seen young people — lawyers, physicians, accountants, people with high cognitive jobs who can’t do the same workload as before. There are people who are finding it difficult to perform basic tasks,” said Schwartz. Marco believes he contracted the virus — despite efforts to always wear a mask and sanitize hands — during an emergency trip to Mexico last summer to see his father, who was dying from pneumonia and coronavirus. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.“It starts with feeling like you have a cold. My body ached and my sense of smell was gone,” he said.

Marco described himself as being in OK health before the illness, though he has a sedentary lifestyle, working long hours on a computer. He said much more research needs to be done on the fatigue symptom, noting there are many reasons that can be linked to fatigue such as anxiety, stress, and trying to recover from a major illness while trying to do too much.Article contentThe clinic is also screening COVID-19 patients for mental health deterioration, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The clinic has on hand psychiatrists as well as a team of doctors and rehabilitation experts.
