Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children with mental health conditions are living chained up in roughly 60 countries, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.

Without mental health support or awareness, families or institutions often shackle people against their will, leaving them eating, sleeping, urinating and defecating in one small space, the rights watchdog said in a report.

“We have found the practice of shackling across religions, social strata, economic classes, cultures and ethnic groups - it’s a practice that is found around the world,” said Kriti Sharma, senior disability rights researcher at Human Rights Watch, in an interview. China’s foreign ministry and Mexico’s health ministry did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. A Nigerian health ministry spokesman said the ministry had not seen the report and declined to comment.

But around the world, in state-run and private centres and traditional and religious healing institutions, handlers deny people food, force medications and herbal remedies on them, and mete out physical and sexual violence, Human Rights Watch said. The watchdog said families often shackle their loved ones out of fear they will escape and harm themselves or others.

TributeProjects we are required to bring humanity, not guns, to the world.

People all around the world were not represented. Shackled or free to run unchecked is the same fate, beaten, raped, killed, robbed...... I live in Cali, USA & the mentally ill live out there lives on the streets like Mary Magdalene. Jesus healed her! Christians have work to do.

This needs to be the ONLY thing the entire world is aware of. The leaders of the world are responsible for allowing this to happen without merciless action against these governments.

Unfortunately, in these countries mental health is poorly understood&diagnosed. This also gets coupled with even fewer medical mental personnel&health institutions to cope. Its a dire situation & a cycle that needs to be broken.

Omg

Thats one of Trumps 2nd term keystone policies and now you've blown it

Oh very sad ...

If only they had antifa there to throw things and shout, this would all go away.

it's very inhumane ☹️,I wonder when these worldwide associations with strong power will intervene to abolish this serious abuses. Enough to notice, observe and note your reports.

Here in USA men and women, but mostly men, with mental health conditions, are in the White House, and in Congress, barely working, with full health care benefits, paid vacations, and short work schedules, while they argue over policies that affect every one in the country.

Somebody tell them Black lives matter

Send in the BLM, they looks like they need them

💔

You said globally but using a photo from africa!!!

In the 70's, I saw geriatric mental patients in USA state-run institutions tied to their beds at night and tied to their chairs all day during daytime. I hope it no longer happens....

Nigeria has far more mentally ill than they know. You can find groups of Nigerians blessing their President Trump. They don't even know who their president is or they just work cheaper than American or European bloggers & trolls.

You are saying globally but using a photo from Africa. That’s weird. Obviously you are diverting the negative issue from the developed world. But most of the people with mental issues might be from the developed countries.

Where is Black Lives Matter who pretend they care about black lives?

These are human beings. They deserve dignity and compassion.

They need nutritional assistance. Not big Pharma.

The Forgotten F-Word in the Pandemic'There’s an authority figure and voice that has been missing from the COVID-19 conversation since day one: a mental health commissioner or czar. In other words, a mental health version of Anthony Fauci,' writes MonicaLewinsky MonicaLewinsky Enjoyed the article! Thank you! MonicaLewinsky Excellent writing on an under-explored subject. MonicaLewinsky Brilliantly written and I agree 100%. So many people suffering emotionally and mentally with no guidance.
