Ireland's top doctor temporarily stood down in July, when he tragically revealed his wife had entered palliative care after an ongoing cancer battle.
Mr Donnelly also thanked Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, for filling in for the past few months and said he looks forward to working with both of them from now on - saying “the more expertise, the better.”He said: “Of course I welcome back Dr Tony Holohan. “I think Dr Glynn has done incredibly well in stepping into that role and I very much look forward to working with Dr Glynn and Dr Holohan.
Speaking at the time of standing down, Dr Holohan said: "My wife, Emer, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer in2012. She has had a number of difficult years with her disease and was admitted for palliative care last Saturday.
