PETALING JAYA: Selangor police have set their sights on reducing index crime, which includes willful homicide, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault, by 5% and are hoping to do so through crime prevention operations throughout the state.

Selangor Crime Prevention and Community Safety department chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk K. Kumaran said police would carry out such operations throughout September as index crime had increased after the recovery movement control order was introduced.

"Among the index crimes we will be paying close attention to these operations are wayside robbery cases. "These cases can cause trauma to victims and lead to fear within the community," he said after launching the operations at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on Tuesday .SAC Kumaran urged the community to come forward and help the police by channeling information on crime activities."The operations will involve 742 officers and personnel from nine districts ," he said.

He explained that the operations would also involve joint operations such as static checks and mobile surveillance through roadblocks and patrols."From Jan 1 to Aug 31, we have recorded 1,031 gang robberies, 610 robberies, 2,095 thefts, 1,020 car thefts, 3,001 motorcycle thefts and 1,838 house break-in cases," he said.
