The number of Australians dying from drug overdoses has risen steadily since 2001, with about three quarters of those in 2018 unintentional, and experts say stigma and discrimination is to blame as prescription medicine dependence is not treated appropriately.

The number of Australians dying from drug overdoses has risen steadily since 2001 and experts say stigma and discrimination is to blame.Regional Western Australia had the highest rate of deaths in the countryAustralia's Annual Overdose Report, published by not-for-profit drug and alcohol research centre the Penington Institute, found while there had been a sharp increase in the number of deaths related to stimulants, prescription pharmaceuticals were the leading cause of death.

Dr McNally said the public image associated with drug overdoses was that it was caused by illicit drug use, while the reality was that prescription drugs were the problem. But Mr Headlam said he rarely sees clients who die from drug overdoses, because most of his clients are users of alcohol and illicit drugs, not prescription pharmaceuticals.

The report found that based on trends between 2001 and 2018, both drug-induced deaths and unintentional drug-induced deaths have been increasing on average by 3 per cent each year.Between 2001 and 2018, Australia's population increased by 29.9 per cent while the number of drug-induced deaths grew by 58.6 per cent. But opioid dependence expert, Dr Gabrielle Campbell from the University of Sunshine Coast said the main problem was stigma in both doctors and patients.

So ten times Covid?

Cough

So if it's more than the road death toll it's definitely more than Wuhan virus. Where's the media perspective/context on what poses the greatest threat to public health? (Hint: it ain't the virus)

So is the answer to deny chronic pain sufferers medication which has allowed them some quality of life for many years? Perhaps english is not every patient's 1st language? There has to be other reasons for this suicide increase, than abuse of medication.

G’day ABCnews while you’ve got PatrickGormann there, ask him how Jarrod is and if he and his Victoria Police copper Ma’at Martin are still dealing drugs and thugging over people !

Grog and ciggies

lol...nope ..the death is directly related to increases in disability handouts and we have a proportion of population faking it and going high on drugs, alcohol and medication.for real numbers just tell us how many die who don't do alcohol and drugs and only on medications.
