As of August 23, just over 2,600 coronavirus infections had been recorded among Victorian health care workers. Mr Wilson said most cases were reported in July and August in two distinct waves. “In hospitals about 70 per cent of people who were infected are nursing staff while a much smaller number are medical staff,” he said.
He said the evidence from the research suggested poor infection practices, an environment of contamination and staff members traveling between facilities were some of the primary drivers of outbreaks in nursing homes. In hospitals, some outbreaks occurred in busy wards while other infections were linked to putting on and removal of personal protective equipment. “There’s a whole series of different things that we’re learning and that we’re acting on to try and prevent infections," he said.

Qld health bolsters mask mandate | Sky News AustraliaMask wearing has been made mandatory for anyone in a hospital across Greater Brisbane and Ipswich as Queensland health authorities work to curb the spread of a coronavirus cluster. \n\nVisitors, staff and patients were all required to don a mask inside a hospital as a cluster sourced to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre was linked to 10 active cases, with 17 active cases recorded across the state. \n\nThe Chief Health Officer advised state residents to wear a mask in areas where maintaining a 1.5 metre distance was difficult, saying it would not necessarily prevent someone from transmitting the virus but it would reduce the risk. \n\nMore venues across Greater Brisbane have been added to the list of locations visited by coronavirus patients during their infectious period, including Calamvale Shopping Centre, Officeworks at Ipswich and a Coles at Forest Lake. \n\nHealth officials asked anyone who attended those venues during the same period as the infectious person to present themselves for testing if they develop the slightest symptoms. \n\nImage: AP And where is the science to back up that masks actually work?
