New Zealand authorities are looking at a “new and strong line of investigation” after a mystery case of COVID-19 in a worker at an isolation hotel.

A number of Rydges hotels in New Zealand are being used to isolate those returning from overseas. Picture: Michael Bradley/Getty ImagesOn Tuesday, the NZ government said the maintenance worker, who had symptoms from August 11 and returned a positive test result on August 16, works at the Rydges Hotel managed isolation facility in Auckland and “does not have any routine contact with guests”.

The woman arrived at the Auckland hotel on July 28, after a flight from Los Angeles, and tested positive in managed isolation on July 31. “There’s been some further very good investigation work by Auckland Regional Public Health that has identified that the maintenance worker used a lift, the same lift as the case from the 31st of July,” Dr Bloomfield told reporters on Thursday.

“We have seen before and we know that the virus can be passed on contaminated services, so I think some excellent work by Regional Public Health and we will keep you updated on that investigation.”Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.
