Health officials lost track of returned travellers staying in Melbourne's hotel quarantine scheme and threats of suicide were dismissed, according to a nurse giving evidence at an inquiry into the botched program.

A nurse fronting an inquiry says department staff struggled managing returned travellersThe inquiry is probing failures within Victoria's hotel quarantine program

The nurse said she saw details about a highly-distressed patient on handover notes when she began an afternoon shift, only to realise a doctor at the hotel had not been notified. The inquiry, chaired by former Judge Jennifer Coate, is investigating flaws in Melbourne's hotel quarantine program, including how it was managed and which government departments were in charge.
