Despite the fact a deadly virus is raging around us, thousands of young Australians have decided to dump their private health insurance as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic set in.

While the premium revenue drop of 1.4 per cent in the June quarter is attributed to the ongoing decline in membership as well as premium concessions and a deferral of increases as a result of the pandemic.

"Obviously the sector has had a very tough quarter and with some of the volatility in the market, the profitability has reduced," she said. And Dr David says it needs help from the Government to reduce its premiums so it can keep doing exactly that. There is increasing pressure on the Federal Government to reconsider further changes to the industry.

Labor's health spokesman, Chris Bowen, has also called on the Government to reconsider the private health insurance premium increase expected in the October federal budget.

why ? Blind Freddy can answer that . It's not worth the expense and in reality has been a ripoff and a con job for decades , and if it weren't for fed government subsidisation would have bee dumped by everyone ages ago.

Because it’s not worth it. I ditched mine years ago. We should be like 🇨🇦, no private health, only public, the same access for all. Not for those who have money get to the front of the cue faster- just so wrong.

Let me see. They lost their jobs or are stood down on Jobkeeper and can’t afford to pay mortgage or rent

Because if you look at it closely enough you find that it is a complete waste of money! So heavily weighted towards the funds . All private health should be scrapped and Medicare levies increased. Our public health system is already envied why not strive to make it world leading.

Because it’s an industry that relies on a majority of users paying for a service they don’t need to fund the minority that use it. I’d rather just pay my taxes and have the same outcome instead WITHOUT premiums included.

Exorbitant cost even for basic cover that includes a whole lot of things I don’t need and does not cover other things I do need. We would pay much more for a hospital stay than if we had no private insurance. Cost benefit is negative.

because they are simply RIPPING PEOPLE OFF

Because we don't want to end up like America's health system, which is what ScottMorrisonMP and his mates want. Privatisation of Health, Education and Power. That's why they get lots of kick backs and shares as gestures of good will, puppets

'Politicization of HCQ is an ongoing tragedy. HCQWorks best when given early in COVID19. Hospitalization can be avoided.. HCQ found by numerous studies to reduce mortality, severity of symptoms & length of hosp stays.'—Dr McCullough MD MPH, Baylor Univ

Because when you lose your job you can't afford it anymore.

Because its a fucking rip off

I’m sure it's a mystery to whose staff all get paid from the government teat regardless of what restrictions the government place on the rest of the community.

Because it's an organised legal scam.

... because private health insurance was a rip-off that people lamented in the best of times. Its lack of value for money identifies it as just the kind of thing to jettison in a more difficult time. I hope its death spiral continues all the way into the ground. auspol

Because Australians are doing it tougher and tougher every year while the pollies cut back services and everything they can possibly cut which may benefit regular people, all while they give themselves payrises, shovel money into their bank accounts and sell off our public assets

BneResidents It needs overhauling along with all our public and private health insurance, but the current government is ideologically bound to it, so reform is not possible.

Because it’s a luxury that doesn’t actually provide any return in the form of actual healthcare

It's sad because I need it but it's so expensive and it doesn't cover what I need. I have hospital cover and that's it. AWFUL.

Because no one can afford it.

steph_dalzell 'Why are people cutting costs when they have less money' asks noted bigbrain, steph_dalzell. Mentioning it in the heart of the article as one of many causes doesn't change the nonsense question in the headline.

Wasn't the fabulous Medicare supposed to negate the need for Private Health insurance. It and Medicare are a rort used by many in the medical profession to boost their bottom line, But let's do the same test the other doctor did?

Simple no money

Ummmm, the realisation that the insurance part is not commensurate with the cost...

Public hospitals are refusing Aged Care patients so they are being sent to Private? Really? So why bother paying if you’re guaranteed Private beds for zero cost? Free hip & joint operations...everything free...

Because it’s a Ponzi scheme

Affordability & lack of employment

Because its a rort.

Ive considered it since I cant actually visit a dentist or orthodontist, my physio is closed, etc. And those are the things that i cant pay out of pocket for all at once. Im spending 100 a month for nothing right now.

Not what it once was when it was the old HBA.........Some Doctors charge what they want. Too many out of pocket expenses and less and less things are covered every year.

It’s such a waste of money!

Because its expensive! Its hardly a mystery.

Kinda a cruel headline considering the financial stress and anxiety people are feeling right now and expect to keep feeling for a long time.

It's been proved - again - to be worth less than they pay for

Simple equation: Cost Benefit

Coz they have no money.

We ditched it waste of money pay monthly fees and pay excess fess it’s bullshit rip off

Because at the end of the day what's the point of it

If I thought that it would allow me to use the treatment I choose for covid if I got ill I would sign up tommorow, but alas the government banned it and Qld have made it a criminal offence, oh well no point paying if I can’t CHOOSE ?

Because it's a scam?

Ban anyone over 65 starting in the system. You can’t freeload your whole life then jump in right as your medical bills skyrocket The only cost extra is the LHCL Young people already subsidise boomers in every imaginable way

Because it's a rort.
